His father was a Member of Parliament for Western Calgary. At age 16, Arthur began working in Alberta\u2019s oilfields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1939, he entered military service, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force as a reconnaissance bomber captain. In 1952, he entered public service, successfully running for Calgary City Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two years later, he became a member of Alberta&#8217;s Legislative Assembly, defeating Donald MacKay with a 10,000-vote lead. By 1957, Smith transitioned to federal politics, serving in the House of Commons. During his time in Parliament, he represented Canada at United Nations sessions, focusing on issues like the Middle East and apartheid. In 1961, he was appointed President of the Air Cadet League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After Parliament dissolved in 1963, Smith left federal politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Return_to_Business\"><\/span>Return to Business<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his political career, Smith returned to the business world. He held leadership positions in various companies, including serving as President and CEO of SNC-Lavalin Inc. for over 18 years, earning international recognition for his marketing achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur frequently shared his business expertise with students, teaching at institutions like the Banff School of Fine Arts, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Mount Royal College, and the University of Calgary. He also engaged in fundraising initiatives for these institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1981, former Calgary Mayor Ralph Klein recognized Smith\u2019s expertise and invited him to help establish the Calgary Economic Development Authority. Arthur agreed and played a pivotal role in its success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on Smith\u2019s work in Calgary, Alberta\u2019s Economic Development Authority was created in 1994. He continued as a consultant and senior advisor to SNC-Lavalin Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Community_Contributions\"><\/span>Community Contributions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1997, Arthur was instrumental in developing protocols for the Winter Olympics in Calgary. He also co-founded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Calgary Booster Club<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Olympic Development Association<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>University of Calgary\u2019s International School of Business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1997, Smith was honored as an honorary colonel of the 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron and received the Alberta Order of Excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1998, Smith founded the Calgary Homeless Foundation, dedicated to combating homelessness in Calgary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Legacy\"><\/span>Legacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur Ryan Smith passed away in 2008.
